After being homeported in Norfolk, Va., for more than 25 years, the BARRY headed for Japan in January 2016. She makes her homeport out of Norfolk, Virginia, fights under the motto of "Strength and Diversity" and is the forth USN vessel to carry the Barry name. Barry joined Destroyer Division 67 in the Canal Zone 18 October 1940. In October 1922, she departed Hampton Roads, Virginia, for the Mediterranean where she served with the U. S. Naval Detachment in Turkish Waters until July 1923. Barry was possibly the only U.S. Navy ship to receive battle stars for all three area campaign medals. Hampton Roads is the name of both a body of water that serves as a wide channel for the James, Nansemond and Elizabeth rivers between Old Point Comfort and Sewell's Point where the Chesapeake Bay flows into the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding metropolitan region located in the Southeastern Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina portions of the Tidewater region. USS Barry (DDG 52) is the fourth United States Navy Ship named after Commodore John Barry. USS Barry (DDG-52) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, commissioned in 1992. The group conducted two sweeps (30 July – 10 September and 28 September – 8 November) during which aircraft from Card sank eight German submarines. The fire threatened the forward magazine which could not be reached to flood. She was the second Navy ship named for Rear Admiral Louis M. Goldsborough (1805–1877).
